I happily announce to you that last weekend, I visited my fourth Macedonian wedding party, and the first of this years wedding season. The question I have been asked on all these occasions, and never have been able to answer, is burning on my tongue right now: “What does a Dutch wedding look like?” Please fellow Dutchies, who will help me to answer this question?

Na het eerste nachtje op de boerderij is het grootste familiefeest van de familie G. aangebroken. Het is Pasen! Oftewel Veligden. Iedereen komt naar de boerderij. Vooral om te eten eigenlijk. Tja, met een groep van twintig man ben je nu eenmaal wat tijd kwijt aan de voorbereidingen, de maaltijden en het schoonmaken.

Op deze orthodoxe paaszaterdag gaat de wekker in Kocani al om 06:30. Dat hoort niet bij de traditie (en ik hoop dat dit zo blijft). Na een frisse douche en een ontbijt met zelfgebakken brood en zelfgemaakte jam van zelfgeplukte vruchten stappen we de auto in naar de boerderij van baba en dedo op het platteland in Oost-Macedonie.

In het echt was het indrukwekkender

After the try-out biking of last weekend, it was now time for the real deal. I thought the 67 km long circle would be easy with only about 250 meters in height difference, but I was wrong. Well… actually it was really not that bad, but we didn’t have time to take long breaks, as the website where we got the idea for the route promised. Though we díd drink some wine straight from the barrel!
